World AIDS Day
In 2004 there were a total of 38 million people living
with HIV/AIDS, three million more than in 2001. The
region worst hit by the disease is sub-Saharan Africa,

million people, live with HIV/AIDS. Even if the majority
of people with HIV infection are adults, a growing
number of children and adolescents bear the burden of
HIV/AIDS. The term HIV/AIDS orphans is used to describe
children under 18 years old who have lost one or both
parents to the disease.
